1. Introduction
The teaching profession is not confined to just imparting syllabus knowledge; it is a process of leading the students, fellow teachers, and the entire school in a specific and positive direction. Therefore, every teacher is a natural leader. Without teacher leadership, the academic and social environment of a school can never improve. The first condition of successful leadership is self-understanding. If a teacher knows their weaknesses (e.g., getting angry quickly), they can remain calm for some time without reacting suddenly during a conflict. Understanding their capability (e.g., good explaining power), they can also help other teachers. A self-aware leader knows that they might not know everything, so they do not hesitate to accept opinions from others.
6. Meaning of Leadership Style
Leadership style is the method or behavior by which a leader (or teacher) gives instructions, manages, and makes decisions for the followers (students). The way of giving leadership is not the same for all teachers.
7. Democratic Leadership
- Meaning: The teacher seeks the students' opinions before making a decision.
- Characteristics: Open discussion, equal participation, and consensus.
- Advantage: Students' creativity and self-confidence increase.
- Limitation: It takes more time to make a decision.
- Example: The teacher taking a vote in class to decide where to go for a picnic.
8. Autocratic Leadership
- Meaning: The teacher alone makes all decisions and expects only obedience from the students.
- Characteristics: Strict control, clear instructions, and rules.
- Advantage: Decisions can be made very quickly in emergency and chaotic situations.
- Limitation: Students' freedom is curtailed and fear is created.
- Example: Strict instruction given to maintain silence in the exam hall.
9. Laissez-faire Leadership
- Meaning: The teacher gives complete freedom to the students and helps only when necessary.
- Characteristics: Observer's role, responsibility in the hands of the students.
- Advantage: Students learn to be independent and responsible.
- Limitation: Without proper guidance, there can be chaos in the class.
- Example: Giving students the freedom to draw pictures according to their own choice in a drawing class.
10. Situational Leadership
- Meaning: Changing the leadership style according to the situation and the students' needs.
- Characteristics: Flexibility and deep understanding of the situation.

11. Comparison of Leadership Styles
| Characteristic | Democratic | Autocratic | Laissez-faire | Situational |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decision | Teacher takes it with everyone's consent. | Teacher takes it alone. | Students take it themselves. | Changes according to the situation. |
| Control | Medium | Maximum | Very low | Flexible |
| Communication | Two-way | One-way | As needed | Depending on the situation |
| Utility | Group discussions/projects. | Emergency situations. | Creative work. | In all types of situations. |
12. Choosing the Right Leadership Style
No single style is perfect for all times. A good teacher changes the style by looking at the situation.
- Situation 1 (Emergency, like a fire): Autocratic (strict order to go outside immediately).
- Situation 2 (Selecting class captain): Democratic (taking students' opinions).
- Situation 3 (Poetry writing competition): Laissez-faire (complete freedom).
- Situation 4 (Teaching a new game): Situational (first strict instruction, then freedom to play).
13. Teacher as Role Model
What a teacher says verbally must be reflected in their own behavior. Students imitate the teacher's actions much more than they listen to their words. Example: If a teacher tells students to stay clean and tidy, the teacher must also always come to school neatly dressed.
14. Classroom Application
- Classroom Management: Controlling the environment with a mixture of discipline and love.
- Group Work: Increasing cooperation by dividing responsibilities among students.
- Conflict Resolution: Giving a solution by neutrally listening to both sides.
- Assessment: Maintaining honesty and fairness when giving marks.
- Communication with Parents: Explaining the students' problems to parents with empathy.
15. Practical Suggestions
1. Maintain open communication with students.
2. Write a reflective diary to understand your weaknesses.
3. Do not show bias in class; give equal respect to everyone.
4. Be ready to change your leadership style depending on the situation.
5. During moments of anger, do not react, but calm down and respond.
6. Accept opinions from fellow teachers.
7. Appreciate even the small efforts of students.
8. Think of yourself as a guide rather than thinking of yourself as a 'boss'.
16. Conclusion
The success of a school depends more on the leadership of its teachers than on its infrastructure. A teacher who acquires the right qualities and leadership styles not only ensures the educational development of the students but also molds them as future good citizens and leaders. This journey is successful only through self-understanding and empathy.

Teacher Q&A (Expected Questions)
Example: A teacher taking the lead and inspiring others in a school cleaning drive.
Example: The teacher controlling all students in a group task.
Example: Trying to understand instead of scolding a student who couldn't study due to domestic problems.
Follow-up Question: What is the difference between empathy and Sympathy?
Answer: Sympathy means just feeling bad for someone's sorrow. Empathy means putting yourself in their place, feeling the pain, and helping them.
Example: Taking a vote to select the class captain.
Example: Giving an instruction to immediately go outside during a fire.
Follow-up Question: What will happen if this style is used always?
Answer: Fear will be created among the students and their own thinking power will disappear.
Example: Giving them the freedom to design according to their own choice in a project work.
Follow-up Question: What is a big disadvantage of this?
Answer: If students do not have proper knowledge, there might be chaos in the class due to a lack of proper guidance.
Example: Being strict while doing math and being like a friend during play time.
Example: Being autocratic during exams and laissez-faire while making a wall magazine.
Example: The teacher understanding that they are tired and doing light teaching instead of scolding the students in class.
Follow-up Question: What mistakes does a leader without self-understanding make?
Answer: They blame others for their own mistakes (Blame game) and become arrogant.
Example: Punishing one's favorite student just like the others if they don't do homework.
Follow-up Question: Does fairness mean treating everyone identically?
Answer: No. Making a visually impaired student sit on the front bench is fairness, here they are not treated identical to other students, but justice is provided.
Example: Instead of fighting over the responsibilities of the annual function, sitting and discussing it in the presence of the headmaster.
Answer: Through self-reflection and accepting constructive feedback from others.
Example: Explaining rules to a student and making them obey is discipline, and beating with a cane unnecessarily is strictness.
Follow-up Question: How can true discipline be brought into the class?
Answer: By the teacher obeying the rules themselves and establishing a relationship of love and understanding with the students.
Common Confusions
1. Leadership vs Authority: Authority comes from a position (like headmaster), people obey out of fear. Leadership comes from qualities, people obey out of respect.
2. Discipline vs Strictness: Discipline builds a student's character. Excessive strictness only creates fear and rebellion in the student's mind.
3. Confidence vs Arrogance: "I can do this work" — this is confidence. "Only I can do this work, no one else can" — this is arrogance.
4. Democratic leadership vs Complete freedom: Although students' opinions are taken in the democratic style, the final decision and control remain in the teacher's hands. This doesn't mean letting them do whatever they want.
5. Autocratic leadership vs Effective control: The autocratic style is effective control for emergency situations, but applying it always makes it Dictatorial.
6. Empathy vs Sympathy: Sympathy means just expressing sorrow for someone's pain. Empathy means putting yourself in another's place, understanding the problem, and trying to solve it.
7. Fairness vs Treating everyone identically: Fairness doesn't mean treating everyone identically, rather providing justice according to each one's need (e.g., giving extra time to a specially-abled student is fairness, not biasness).
