(Appreciation and Self-understanding)

(How Appreciation Reveals Strengths)

(Excessive Dependence on Appreciation)
(Balanced Self-understanding)
(Classroom Application)

Here, the complete Group Assignment required for the first unit (Unit 1) of the D.El.Ed program is presented. This material is academically advanced, informative, and fully prepared for presentation as well as for the teacher's Viva-voce.
Appreciation from Others for Enhancing Self-understanding
1. Introduction
Praise in human life is not just a source of motivation, it is also a powerful medium for self-discovery. Self-understanding means recognizing one's strengths, weaknesses, nature, and capabilities. Often, we cannot identify certain special qualities or skills within ourselves on our own. But when someone else observes our behavior and gives us positive feedback or appreciation, we become aware of that quality. For D.El.Ed trainees, meaning future teachers, this topic is extremely important because a teacher must understand their own capabilities and also help students recognize their talents.
2. Objectives
The main objectives of this group assignment are:
1. Understanding the true meaning of appreciation: Understanding that appreciation is not just flattery, but rather an acknowledgment.
2. Analyzing the process: Knowing how appreciation leads to self-understanding through reflection.
3. Identifying hidden talents: Discovering one's suppressed skills through others' feedback.
4. Understanding the importance of constructive feedback: Knowing that criticism also helps in self-development.
5. Understanding the difference between flattery and appreciation: Analyzing the difference between false praise and true acknowledgment.
6. Determining the role of the teacher: Learning how a teacher can use appreciation for the development of students in the classroom.
7. Reducing dependency: Learning to do internal evaluation without being overly dependent on appreciation.
3. Meaning of Appreciation
- Simple Meaning: Appreciation is sincerely acknowledging the good qualities, efforts, or actions of others.
- Academic Explanation: From an academic perspective, appreciation is positive reinforcement, which makes an individual aware of their correct behavior or skill.
- Daily Example: A mother told her child for helping to sweep the house, "You are very responsible." Through this, the child understood the quality of their sense of responsibility.
4. Appreciation and Self-understanding
Appreciation does not directly give self-understanding. There is a mental process in between: Appreciation -> Reflection -> Recognition -> Self-understanding -> Improvement. When someone praises us, we think about it (Reflection). Then we accept our quality (Recognition) and finally, it turns into our self-understanding.
5. Types of Appreciation
- Verbal appreciation: Giving acknowledgment of good work verbally (e.g., "You sang the song very beautifully").
- Written appreciation: The teacher writing "Excellent" at the back of the notebook.
- Academic appreciation: Giving acknowledgment for the hard work and results in studies.
- Professional appreciation: Acknowledgment given for punctuality or leadership in the workplace.
- Peer appreciation: Praise done by peers (e.g., "It was nice working with you").
6. Appreciation from Teachers
Appreciation from teachers increases the academic and emotional self-understanding of students. Example: When the teacher says, "You have answered the question very logically," the student understands that their logical thinking capacity is good.
7. Appreciation from Parents
Appreciation received in the home environment helps in recognizing a child's character and values. Example: When the father says, "I am proud of you for telling the truth," the child recognizes their quality of honesty.
8. Appreciation from Peers
Praise done by peers reveals social skills and emotional intelligence. Example: When a friend says, "You listen to my words very attentively," the person understands that they are a good listener.
9. How Appreciation Reveals Strengths
There are some 'Blind spots' in the human mind, meaning qualities that we have but we do not know ourselves. Others' appreciation brings these blind spots to light. Real example: A shy student drew a beautiful picture in a group project. Only after their peers praised them did they understand that an exceptional artistic talent is hidden within them.
10. Role of Feedback
Along with appreciation, constructive feedback is also needed. Constructive feedback points out the good aspects of an individual while politely reminding them of the areas needing improvement. It is indispensable for true self-understanding.
11. Appreciation vs Flattery
Appreciation is sincere, true, and based on specific work. On the other hand, flattery is falsely exaggerating others to fulfill one's own selfish interests. Flattery makes a person arrogant and self-deluded.
12. Appreciation and Self-confidence
Appreciation first creates self-understanding, which later builds self-confidence. Self-understanding is knowing "what I can do", and self-confidence is the belief that "I can do it". Proper appreciation strengthens both of these.
13. Excessive Dependence on Appreciation
If appreciation becomes excessive, the individual becomes dependent on external validation. If they do not receive praise, they show no interest in doing any work and suffer from despair. As a result, belief in oneself is lost.
14. Balanced Self-understanding
External appreciation should always be balanced with internal self-reflection. Without believing others blindly, one should judge for themselves, "Is this praise really applicable to me?"
15. Classroom Application
Instead of just generally saying "very good", a teacher should praise specifically. Also, not only the result, but the effort of the students should be praised (e.g., "Even if you couldn't match the math problem, your effort is commendable").
16. Student-teacher Application
As future teachers, D.El.Ed trainees should accept the appreciation and criticism received from their mentors positively. One should learn from it without getting defensive upon hearing criticism.
17. Practical Examples
Example 1 (Communication skill):
- Situation: Rahul explained a complex science topic in class.
- Appreciation: The teacher said, "Your explaining power is very clear and simple."
- Realization: Rahul thought, "My communication skill is good."
- Action: He participated in a debate competition.
- Result and Learning: He won a prize and understood that he could be a good teacher or speaker in the future.
Example 2 (Leadership quality):
- Situation: When there was chaos on the playground, Rita asked everyone to form a line.
- Appreciation: The P.T. sir said, "You controlled the situation very beautifully."
- Realization: Rita recognized her management capacity.
- Action: She contested for the post of class captain.
- Result and Learning: She won and learned lessons in leadership.
Example 3 (Creativity):
- Situation: In a project work, Anita made beautiful items out of waste materials.
- Appreciation: Her peers said, "Your way of thinking is completely exceptional."
- Realization: She discovered her creative mind.
- Action: She gave more importance to art and craft.
- Result and Learning: Her self-understanding increased.
Example 4 (Constructive criticism):
- Situation: During practice teaching, Ayan was speaking very fast.
- Feedback: The mentor said, "The teaching is good, but it would be much better if you speak a bit slower."
- Realization: Ayan understood his weakness.
- Action: He practiced speaking slowly at home.
- Result and Learning: He taught beautifully in the next class.
Example 5 (Empathy):
- Situation: Runu calmed down a crying student.
- Appreciation: The teacher said, "You are very affectionate and patient."
- Realization: Runu understood her emotional maturity.
- Action: She started helping others too.
- Result and Learning: She became known as an empathetic person.
18. Suggestions
1. Appreciation should always be specific and reason-based.
2. Upon receiving praise, do not become arrogant but use it as a tool for reflection.
3. Always keep an open mind towards constructive criticism.
4. Give importance to students' efforts, not just intelligence.
5. Do your own internal evaluation without depending entirely on external appreciation.
6. Build a healthy environment of appreciating each other among peers.
7. Cultivate the habit of writing a reflection diary for self-understanding.
19. Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that appreciation is like a mirror, which brings our unknown and hidden qualities to light. When appreciation is combined with reflection, it transforms into a powerful self-understanding. Knowing how to appreciate others as a teacher and knowing how to analyze the appreciation received oneself is the main key to professional success.
